Top 10 Worst Animated Films of All Time

Writer's picture: Steven CohenSteven Cohen

For the past month I have been ranking the best animated films for Disney, Pixar and Non-Disney/Pixar films (DreamWorks, Sony, Warner Bros., Illumination, etc). However after talking about some of the best films I thought it would be appropriate to talk about some of the worst animated films that I have watched in my lifetime. Unlike the last few lists, this one is going to be full on opinionated and it’s going to be shocking what films will be on this list. Some of these films you probably forgot about and some you might not have heard of. Now in order to be on my list I have to had seen the films already, so any animated rip offs, straight to DVD films, small production companies with very horribly animated film’s I haven’t seen in general that were in theaters will not count for my list. Now again some of these might surprise you and you might not agree with me and I am okay with that as we all have our opinions on what animated films we think are good or bad. Comment below what animated film you think is the worst and let’s countdown my Top 10 Worst Animated Films of All Time.

Top 10 Worst Animated Films of All Time

10. Shrek the Third (2007) – I literally said this is going to shock some people and I bet seeing Shrek the Third for some people on this list is eye opening, especially if they didn’t see my review for it. Shrek the Third is a very sad attempt of continuing the franchise with a half-ass story and just ridiculous butt jokes. In this film, Shrek needs to find the new heir of the throne because he doesn’t think he is fit to be king, but at the same time he is worried about being a father after Fiona tells him she is pregnant. While this is all happening, Prince Charming seeks to get revenge on Shrek and become the new King of Far, Far, Away. The film does have its decent moments but there is only like a few good moments like a couple of funny jokes, a very great heart to heart scene with Shrek and Arthur and the ending of the film where Shrek is being a good dad and husband. The rest of this film however is a huge joke and disappointment. You got to think after the success of the first two films, both with amazing stories and an amazing team working on the film, that this new team would continue that great success and possibly make an even better movie than the first two films and well as you can see they didn’t. The plot and story is kind of all over the place, Charming makes a terrible villain, most of the characters in the film are kind of pointless and lose so much charm that they had in the first two films, the soundtrack is god awful and doesn’t work with the scenes they are in and in all honesty this film felt like a straight to DVD film or after school program. More importantly I used to love this film when I was younger but I was blinded by the flaws of this film and after finally watching many YouTube video’s on this movie I can honestly say that Shrek the Third is the worst. It’s not the most horrible animated movie ever but more a disappointing one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L1sL54G45Q

9. Valiant (2005) – How many of you actually remember or heard of this movie. This Buena Vista/Walt Disney Pictures computer animated film is by far one of the most boring animated films ever. So this movie is about a pigeons that help the soldiers in the war but what war you may ask, oh I don’t know….WORLD WAR II! So the film takes place during WWII and let’s just say the certain villain of this film kind of has this Hitler vibe into his character. It also doesn’t help that there is PG versions of Nazi symbolism in this film but like hey it’s for children and we don’t want this film to be entirely about the World War and show Nazi symbols…so instead we will have birds fight in a war. The dialogue and story in general is boring, the timing of the film is slow, the animation is not terrible but it’s also not perfect, the voice cast might be pretty cool with names like Ewan McGregor, Tim Curry, Rickey Gervais and John Cleese but I mean they can’t save this boring film. Worst part of all the characters in this film is just straight up annoying and terrible and we can’t relate or engage with them because of how stupid the animators and director make them. There is a reason why many of you have never heard of this film and I’m happy you haven’t because this film is just the worst. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQotjdQ4Lkw

8. Home on the Range (2004) – There is a reason 2-D animated films pretty much died for Disney after this movie as it is the worst film ever created by Disney. Home on the Range is about three cows who must capture an infamous cattle rusher for his bounty in order to save their idyllic farm from being closed. Disney in the early 2000’s was experimenting with new genres of film like sci-fi, comedy and of course westerns and they were either critical flops or box office failures. Now while films like Lilo and Stitch and The Emperor’s New Groove escaped the box office failures and were critically praised films, Home on the Range got hit hard with critics as they said it had a dull plot and garish visuals. For me I find this movie kind of boring but also uninteresting as the characters are not interesting at all, the animation is okay, the story is boring and there nothing fun to look at with this film. Like our main three characters, the cows, are annoying and the villain of this film is no way evil compared to all the other Disney villains in the past. What I don’t understand is how did this amazing animated studio that have put out so many beautiful stories and beautifully animated films put out this pile of western garbage for us to watch. Like I understand that they wanted to try something new and different but I mean if you are going to make a westernish type of animated film why would you use cows as your main protagonists of this film and not I don’t know a badass cowboy. Hell Nickelodeon made a better western animated film that ended up winning an Academy Award. All I can say is at least Disney tried right, it’s not like they would make another live action western remake of a beloved western show and have Johnny Depp play an Indian…..maybe Disney shouldn’t make western films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdZcsrtiUac

7. Cars 2 (2011) – There is no question on what the worst Pixar movie is because quite frankly no Pixar movie is more hated like Cars 2 is. Cars 2 by far a straight to DVD film that has nothing to do with the first film and is pretty much a spinoff movie to Mater. Now I don’t hate the fact that Pixar made a movie for a very loveable character like Mater but why did it have to be a spy movie mixed with a film that is about racing??? Also is it me or did this film kind of ruined the Cars franchise. Cars 3 wasn’t cared for after this horrible film and yet that movie was pretty good. Cars 2 however is terrible. Why the hell did Pixar have this film come out like seriously? The animation is visually stunning but this half-ass attempt of a movie kind of distracts me from seeing how great the animation looks. Now while I think this film is really bad I think it could have been a better film had it not push two stories together into one and focus more on the spy part of the film. The spy part of this film alone could have worked by itself but take out the entire butt jokes and actually have some interesting plot lines around it and we could have had a fun movie. But oh well, there no point in talking about what John Lasseter could have done as the damage was already done and we will always be haunted by this sad attempt of an animated film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJDl0UvvF9I

6. Mars Needs Mom (2011) – I literally feel like this is one of the ugliest looking animated films ever. Not only that but people forget that this was technically a Disney movie since Disney bought the rights from ImageMovers Digital. Mars Needs Mom is about a 9 year old boy who needs to rescue his mom from aliens after they abducted her. The film is computer animated but with the use of motion capture, something that was done with films like The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol. However for this movie it just didn’t work out well. The animation for the characters look horrible and ugly, especially the alien characters who for some reason literally look like solid vomit. The visuals and setting around the characters look pretty good but I mean I can’t get a chance to engage with it when I’m stuck starring at some of the worst character designs ever in an animated movie. The voice cast is decent but I mean it doesn’t save the movie. Plus the whole story and plot of this film feels very all over the place and it feels rushed if you ask me. Like I hate to be that person but motion capture animation only works in live action films. Now hear me out films like Avatar, Planet of the Apes and King Kong have some beautiful animated motion capture of live action CGI characters but in full on animation unless it’s done right it kind of ends up being a huge mess, hence why many animated studios don’t use motion capture in their animated films. Look at Adventures of Tintin, it came out the same year as Mars Needs Mom and yet it was a way better film and the animation looked so much better compared to Mars Needs Mom. Like I said if it is done right then it looks great but if it isn’t then it’s just ugly, just like Mars Needs Mom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWYVQzG0rYk

5. Ice Age: Collision Course (2016) – I feel like the Ice Age franchise has over stayed its welcome because my god this film is ridiculous. Ice Age: Collision Course takes Manny, Sid, Diego and the rest of the gang in a huge crises as they are dealing with possible meteors coming to earth and now they must go on a mission to, get this, into space. *Face palm* The first Ice Age film is one of the best animated movies of the 2000’s and its sequel in 2006 was a very decent film. Ever since then the films that have come from this franchise have been painful to watch and just horrible films and I take a stand with this one. For the love of god please stop making Ice Age films. This film has a huge cast that all of the characters in the film get lost throughout the story. Like there are animated movies that have a lot of characters but they know how to make a story around them and not feel lost. This film loses me completely within the first 20 minutes. Remember when it was a film about a mammoth, a sloth and a sabertooth tiger bringing a human baby back to his kind, yeah this film really lost that idea and this franchise has become stupider and stupider over the years. I think it’s time to finally say this, we need to make the Ice Age franchise extinct because the films are getting worse and worse and when you take a film based on B.C animals going into space, nope you lost me and all hope for you franchise. Oh and apparently there is a 6th film coming out, great!!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ohq6NmKMja8

4. Doogal (2006) – I bet none of you heard of this film or can’t even remember this film and folks it’s time to strap in an talk about this movie So Doogal is a UK/American version of a French film called The Magic Roundabout and this is one of the most half ass animated films ever. So I’m going to stick with the American version because that was the film that I unfortunately saw back when I was a kid and I was uninterested with this movie back then just as much as I am now. This version of the film has a weird voice cast that does not match well and the dialogue sounds so out of place when the voice actor/actress talks. You got names like Jimmy Fallon, Whoopi Goldberg, Chevy Chase, William H. Macy, Kevin Smith and yes I mean Jay and Silent Bob’s Kevin Smith and Ian Mckellen, just to name a few and my god they all need to hire a new manager or agent because my god this is the worst thing all of these actors have done, well not McKellen, my man was in CATS. The story is forgettable and once again the animation for this film is horrendous. Like it looks like something that was put through a wringer and the film production was like yeah that will work. Also this film tends to rely on pop culture references way too much. Honestly Doogal is a pile of dog shit that simmers and stinks up a room for hours; yeah that best explains my reception for this film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQnMcqiuTJU

3. The Wild (2006) – Usually Disney isn’t the production company that has rip offs of certain competitor films like DreamWorks or Warner Bros. but I mean The Wild is simply just a Madagascar rip off. The story is beyond repetitive towards Madagascar when a certain character in the Central Park Zoo wants to travel to Africa and escapes and gets put into a cage that ships to Africa pretty much and the rest of the main Zoo characters must save him to bring him back home. Okay so it’s not the same movie but it is so ripping off Madagascar. Usually DreamWorks rips off Disney and does a decent job at it like with Antz or Shark Tales but my god it is pretty terrible when Disney attempts it. The Wild has uninteresting characters, a bland story and the animation is kind of meh but my god the screenplay and the way the dialogue comes off in this film is so terrible. Plus I find it really odd that the animal characters they picked don’t’ match or work at all like a lion I understand must be the main character since it’s ripping off Madagascar but then you have a giraffe, which is also ripping off Madagascar, then you have a snake, a squirrel and a fucking Koala bear, like why a koala bear. I think the best part of this film is the credits where we see the name of the director. His name is and I’m not kidding this is what they had in the credits and on Wikipedia, Steve “Spaz” Williams, like WTF LMAO! Look with a name like Spaz there is a reason why this film is hot garbage. I know Disney could do way better than this pile of shit and thankfully they have but my god 2004 – 2006 for Disney and I mean just Disney I leave Pixar and the Disney Channel out of this as I simply just mean the Walt Disney Pictures/Studios, but what a dark era they were under with some terrible films and piles of shit they put out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSb1bGUmWGk

2. Bobbleheads: The Movie (2020) – I mentioned this movie in my Worst Movies of 2020 list and I still stand by it, this is the worst film ever created by people who created some of the best animated films ever. The film has people who worked on Atlantis the Lost Empire, Hunchback of Norte Dame, Spirited Away, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, all under one roof…..HOW!?!? The animation in this film is terrible, the voice acting is horrible and my god this story is so all over the place. This is literally Toy Story but with Bobbleheads and just a terrible screenplay. Cher somehow makes an appearance in the film but I mean that’s not hard to know when she is plastered all over the trailer and the poster for this rotten piece of trash. The characters are one-dimensional, the story is literally boring, the action sequences and animation in this film looks like a child put it together and my god the bobblehead animation in general is so distracting and hurts my little eyes that I had to pause the film every 20 minutes because I felt like I was getting a headache. This film is a headache, this film is the type of headache you get after a long night of partying and drinking and doing cocaine in the bathroom with your best mate. I hated everything about this movie. I felt sick while watching this movie and I did it just to see how bad it is and why because I knew after watching the trailer that it was going to be bad but my god I wasn’t ready for this horse shit film. There is nothing worse than seeing your main characters bicker and fight over everything while their heads continue to bobble and hurt your eyes and mind. This movie sucks and should honestly be burnt into a crisp. This movie is the type of movie you see at a gas station on a shelf waiting to be bought at the price of $1.99. I will say it again, this animated film SUCKS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-2UeVAjia4

1. The Emoji Movie (2017) – You don’t need me to tell you how bad this film is the film does it itself. After all one of its biggest character is literally a piece of shit, just like this movie. The Emoji Movie is Sony’s laziest piece of shit film that they ever created. Here is an idea that they made, let’s make a film centered on emojis. Kids love them, people use them on everything now and they are the most popular thing since slice bread. It will totally work and be the most amazing animated film ever. FUCK NO LOL! This film has the worst screenplay and plot in all of animation and film history and every character in this film is annoying and unlikeable. How in the hell did they get Sir Patrick Stewart to voice a poop emoji, like how much money was sent his way to do 10 lines pretty much. The jokes and humor in this film feels like a 5th grader put it together. And the product placement in this movie is through the roof. This unoriginal animated film somehow managed to destroy the reputation of Sony being known as a decent studio with a somewhat pretty good animation studio and one film almost ruined its reputation. Thankfully its friendly neighborhood Spider-Man saved its ass and won it many awards and praise because this movie almost buried the company 6 feet under. The Emoji Movie is just as terrible as Donald Trump, 9/11 jokes, Mel Gibson and pretty much everything on the planet Earth that is terrible, it is that horrible. And if you know someone that likes this movie then you need to literally stop talking to that person or buy them a new brain for Christmas because they needs Jesus. I rather watch Cailou, I rather watch the bald headed brat on PBS then this horrible animated film. I honestly can talk bad about this film all day but after talking bad about 10 films I need to lie down and watch some real animated films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8pJt4dK_s4

And just like that our Animation Worst list has been completed and while I loved talking about shitty animated films I also hated every minute of it. But Animation Month is close to being over and we have one final list for Animation Month. Next week will be a huge list where I rank the 10 best Animated Films ever and with it there will be a video version on my YouTube and hopefully Instagram. I want to hype it up now but it is one of my favorite videos I have ever created and is going to be worth the watch. There will also be a guest appearance from a couple of my favorite animated characters. Tune in next week to check it out.

Honorable Mentions:

Bee Movie – I don’t see what is so special with this film. It literally just Seinfeld but in Bee form and yes I said it I dislike Seinfeld. Most of the entire story is meh, the characters are uninteresting and all this movie did was become a internet meme within the years.

Aladdin: Return to Jafar – I will give this film credit for technically being a film before the animated show came out but my god is this film just bad. The whole story is kind of okay but everything around it like the screenwriting and even the characters take a huge dip from the original Aladdin. Also no Robin Williams, smh.

Shark Tales – I mean I find this movie so bad that it’s good. As a kid I loved this movie but now I find it kind of ugly and a big dip from the quality DreamWorks usually puts out. Also it feels like a very small rip off towards Pixar’s Finding Nemo. I don’t hate this movie but I know how bad it really is.

Gnomeo and Juliet – I mean haha funny joke to make a Shakespeare film into a kid’s animated film. At least it’s better than that Dicaprio film from the 90’s that took a modern twist to Romeo and Juliet.
