2021 was such a strange year if you ask me. While the world was still dealing with vaccines, a pandemic, politics and Kim and Kanye’s break up, I was paying attention to the return of films playing in the movie theater. Yes what’s more better than wearing a mask all day outside and seeing anti-vaccine cults standing outside hospitals, well going to the movies of course. 2021 had its fair share of disappointing to very terrible films. This was the year where almost every musical was adapted into film, where we saw iconic cartoon characters get shitty live action films or even see many sequels that we never asked for or needed. Considering that 2020 had its fair share of terrible films, 2021 had surprisingly even worse films. I’m talking about films that will make you want to either get a refund on either your streaming service or even the theater. Films that make you question your existence. Okay maybe not that last one but these 10 films made me want to question why I love movies so much. Now not every film on this list is the worst film ever. A couple of films I am including in this list I was actually excited for but in the ended left me disappointed in the final product. I also didn’t see every film this year so I am probably missing tons of shitty movies but that’s okay cause not only would I not have my sanity but you would pretty much be reading a Stephen King novel by the time I’m done typing. There will be a video version coming out for this list, link will be on the bottom but until then you came here to see myself torture myself this year watching films and wishing I had my life back during those times. Let’s finally get onto our list and let me rank my Top 10 Worst Films of 2021.
My Top 10 Worst Films of 2021

10. Don’t Look up – This movie is kind of mixed with the critics to be honest as while many find the acting to be pretty good, they believed that McKay’s direction to the subject manner was a bit disappointing. The film is about two lower level astronomers attempting to warn the world about an approaching comet that is going to not only hit the Earth but destroy the planet completely. This star studded cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet and Tyler Perry. While the cast might be a huge ensemble of Hollywood heavyweights, it bombed hard in my opinion and is a huge disappointment. While I do believe the acting is pretty good, I for some reason can’t find any care for any of the characters motivations or even their stories. I mean the main plot/story of this film is a pretty huge topic but we miss the point of it in the 2nd act and the story is flopping around between how the characters are dealing with trying to get the story out there to sub plots that ruin the characters completely. I also had a hard time with paying attention to the film as the editing in this film is completely all over the place. I see what Mckay was trying to show with his cuts and editing choices but it kind of felt distracting towards the big picture of the film. Also we have seen Adam McKay create some big political satire films including The Big Short and Vice but while those films were respectfully about a political event that actually happened, this film is kind of a fictional version of what the world might do if a news topic of the earth being destroyed comes out and how politics become a big part of the story. Honestly we see this in Hollywood all the time, a huge cast, a plot evolving something political or controversial and it comes out right around awards season, yup you guessed it this is just a cash grab Oscar baited film that cares less about its story and more about winning awards. It’s a shame really that this film kind of flopped for me as I had high hopes for the film but sadly just like The Oscars this year I was highly disappointed by the final product and wish I had my hours of wasted life back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbIxYm3mKzI

9. Don’t Breathe 2 – Remember that horror movie in 2016 that was about a group of young adults breaking into a blind man’s house and then all hell break’s lose as the old man is a former vet and has dark secrets hidden in his home, if so then you know how amazing the film was and then Hollywood decided let’s make a sequel and humanize the blind man for the film. Now I know what you may be thinking and yes we have seen antagonists become humanized and become the protagonist in certain films but I mean at least it’s done properly and makes sense. These filmmakers are trying to humanize a man who literally kept a woman hostage and tried to put a turkey baster filled with his own specimen to have a child and were trying to humanize him and make him the good guy….does nobody see the problem here. Also the film feels kind of slow and while the first half is somewhat decent, the 2nd half of the film loses its direction entirely. I think there were certain kills in the film that were pretty creative but they weren’t anything crazy. Stephen Lang does a great job in his role as “The Blind Man” but as for the rest of the actors in this film I feel like they were okay and did what they can to make this film seem somewhat enjoyable. That’s not saying that it is but it has its moments of being kind of enjoyable like 10 % of the film is enjoyable. The rest is just a bad attempt to humanize an antagonist and a plot that falls flat on its face. It’s not a terrible film but it’s not a watchable film after just one viewing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRbG2tjHYCA

8. The Forever Purge – Is it me or after Purge Anarchy each Purge film feels like it’s terrible. While Election Year and The First Purge has it’s mixed reviews and has a love hate relationship from its fans, The Forever Purge is another example of why a franchise needs to die and why we should stop making Purge films. I loved the first two purges but after the Anarchy it started to feel like The Purge over stayed its welcome and that also includes the T.V series. The 5th installment of the Purge franchise changes the game for The Purge. The film is about the film but if the purge doesn’t end after 7 am. It shows what happens if it continues forever and honestly in my opinion this film felt more of a cash grab/straight to DVD or on demand film. The film has some pretty intense moments and has some great kills but what it lacks is a good script and a great way to deal with social issues. Pretty much the film is about a group of people trying to leave the United States but also invade the annual Purge but it then continues soon after it pretty much end point of 7 am. The social issue here in this film is obvious, illegal’s living in the U.S and the political side of it, but let’s add in the Purge concept and show what Mexico and El Paso, Texas is like during the Purge but also if the Purge never ends. Honestly I just found this movie to be not disappointing as I came into the film knowing it was going to be bad but it felt disorganized with its entire story. Most of the Purge films uses politics and real life social issues in its story but for this film I feel like it tried too hard to do something about the social issue of immigrations and illegal’s in the United States and in the end it lost its direction with what exactly the film is trying to be. Honestly can we stop making Purge movies now and create a horror film with a new concept that will probably over stay its welcome and become a disappointing franchise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOrXpK-rUaI

7. F9 – Speaking of a franchise that is over staying it’s welcome, let’s talk about one that lost its way after a beloved actor’s death. The Fast and the Furious franchise is somehow still a thing and with a 10th film coming out in a couple of years it should be said that F9 is a simple reason why Fast and Furious should have ended after the 7th film. I mean you don’t even need to watch the film considering each trailer that came out for the film showed the entire film in less than 3 minutes. In this film Dominic Toretto and the gang must stop Toretto’s brother Jakob from pretty much destroying the world, or that’s what Wiki said pretty much is the plot of the film. The story is honestly just stupid because after 8 films we learn about a new sibling in the Toretto family and also why do we need a back-story of both Toretto brother’s that literally is set up for the film’s plot but it has a big reveal in the end when we find out the truth. Also hey Fast and the Furious fans getting butt hurt about this but how many times will the franchise not kill off characters because last I checked Han died in Tokyo Drift/Fast 6 end credit scene and I guess logic makes no sense in the fast and Furious franchise because he somehow managed to survive. You know your franchise is running out of ideas when you add in characters for the sake of keeping a franchise going, bring back characters that were supposedly dead and let’s take a second to realize that this franchise was once about racing and somewhat crime and now it’s about saving the world with racing and cars taking the back seat for FAMILY! Oh and let’s take this franchise to “space” because that’s defiantly what the franchise represents. Also the editing in this film/visual effects look like they were rushed and the action sequences were mediocre. Except for the beginning scene which was pretty much shown in the first trailer which then ruins the excitement for the scene. Yeah F9 really is a big example of a franchise that needs to end. I would say more about the ending but believe me it makes no sense too since I’m not trying to spoil the film for people who want to view the film but let’s just say a certain fan favorite character is returning for the 10th film even though the main actor is dead, at least that what is expected and foreshadowing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSiDu3Ywi8E

6. Space Jam: A New Legacy – The world never asked for this and we always just wondered, what if we had a sequel to Space Jam and what if it starred Lebron James. Well our “what if” scenario was answered and this is the best we can get from Warner Bros. and Warner Animation Group. Just a bunch of bullshit entertainment mixed with product placement left and right including Warner Bros. IP’s everywhere in this entire film. This movie feels lost from its plot as it is about the Looney Tunes and Lebron James taking on an A.I in the Warner Bros. software and his gang of avatars that look exactly like famous current basketball stars. Confused, well so am I. Not to spoil the movie but this A.I takes Lebron and his son into the software because he is upset that Lebron doesn’t like a certain idea created in the software so he kidnaps him and his son and traps them in the Warner Bros. Subverse and the only way to get out is to win a basketball game. Clearly the first movie was a big influence but the execution is done poorly and feels like a failure from the beginning to the end of this movie. Just to name a few key points that make this film bad, the characters all feel pretty uninteresting with exception to AL G Rhythm, the A.I intelligence played by Don Cheadle. He’s an okay villain but he stuck in this joke of a movie. The animation looks okay but when it’s in 2-D. But when the Looney Tunes are in a CGI/live action animated form they look creepy and it just looks weird in general. There are too many cameos in this film that it later becomes distracting from the main point of this film aka Lebron and the Tunes playing a basketball game. Also this film seems like it was made 10 years too late as It should had been made in Lebron’s early prime years or at least star another basketball player that was close to retirement. Kobe Bryant comes to mind to me and I think it would work better but 10 years earlier. Everything else about the film I’m 50/50 with. As I said I liked the 2-D animation of the film, I thought some of the Warner Ip’s the Tunes were parodying were okay and Rick and Morty was probably the only cameo that was amazing. The 90% of the jokes and gags were mediocre and honestly there nothing about the film that can be fixed and make it better as the damaged was done when the film felt more like a Warner Bros. Studios back lot tour but in a 100 plus minute movie. Also the film is too long. The original Space Jam was 88 minutes and was done properly. This one didn’t and in the end this kind of makes the original Space Jam seems like a masterpiece. Side note yes I know Space Jam isn’t the greatest film ever but compared to this film it’s literally The Godfather or Citizen Kane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olXYZOsXw_o

5. Willy’s Wonderland – So I didn’t know where to place this movie on the list as it’s a bad film but that is pretty much the point as the film knows it’s bad so it somehow becomes a so bad it’s good movie and I’m okay to say that while I didn’t like the movie and feel like it is a trashy film that will somehow find a cult following later on in life, it somehow is more enjoyable than most of the films on this list. That being said I still think it’s one of the worst movies of 2021. This film is just Five Night at Freddy’s re-imagined. But how do we make this movie even worse, why let’s add the emotionless Nicolas Cage into the film as our protagonist. While I don’t think Cage is a bad actor, this is one of his best performances in a long time. He has no lines in the film and is simply there to kill animatronics that come to life at night. It’s literally just FNAF but worse. We get an origin story on how the animatronics come to life and why they consume children and honestly it is the most ridiculous reason ever and to some people it’s pretty interesting but in the end of the day you could had gone back to the drawing board and done something more elaborative. Other than Nic Cage, the rest of the acting is pretty one dimensional and feels lifeless. And while the animatronic characters look creepy and their movements look pretty good, they still feel kind of disappointing. Maybe I need another viewing but until then I’m sticking with my gut on this one as I still don’t think this is a good film. It’s enjoyable yes but it adds nothing crazy in the horror movie genre and honestly it would had been better to just make a Five Nights at Freddy’s movie already and I guess if you wanted make it star Nicolas Cage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v27rfaoB2Y

4. Thunder Force – There nothing much to say about this film because there is nothing good about it and nothing positive to say about it. As much I don’t want to say this but Melissa McCarthy has finally lost her touch. Each film she is in feels like it’s the same character just in a different scenario/film. I think if the film she stars in is directed by her husband Ben Falcone then it is going to be a terrible/unfunny film. 6 movies down and a perfect 0 for 6 in directing a good comedy film. It also doesn’t help that the movie is just ridiculous in general. So the film is about two childhood friends who invent a way to become superheroes in a world where criminals have developed super powers. I mean yeah that’s a pretty uninteresting plot considering a good portion of super villains in superhero movies have some sort of super power or at least able to do something close to a superpower. Now not only does Melissa McCarthy make this film unfunny but this film itself makes itself unfunny as the writing is just bad. Plus Octavia Spencer hurts her career for being in this film. How else can we make this film ridiculous, oh yeah Jason Bateman is a villain in the film and he has crab arms….I don’t know how to explain how ridiculous that is so I’m just going to keep moving on. The biggest joke in this film is honestly the entire film as while this isn’t the worst comedy movie ever, it’s defiantly one of the weakest comedy films within the last 10 years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnx6-YLXFwg

3. Tom and Jerry: The Movie – Oh my god did this movie highly disappoint me but I mean I’m not fully shocked. Tom and Jerry is one of the most iconic cartoon characters and you would think with all the success these two characters have had that maybe the same success can be done in a feature film and well it can’t. Tom and Jerry and the animation in this film are actually okay and not at all bad but they are stuck in between live action actors and a terrible story about a wedding in a hotel. Not only that but they both kind of become side characters that also are a sub-plot of the actually plot of the film and that’s a problem when they are the main characters of the entire film. Like I don’t care about this girl who is planning the wedding in the hotel, I don’t care about the hotel’s manager, I don’t care about the couple getting married, I don’t even care about this stupid wedding, I just care about Tom and Jerry but they get stuck in all of these silly schemes/shenanigans in the hotel and it doesn’t feel like a I’m watching Tom and Jerry. Also the film felt too long as 102 minutes for Tom and Jerry to pretty much be side characters in their own film and honestly there have been worst straight to DVD/on demand films for Tom and Jerry but this is an all time low for the characters and honestly I wouldn’t be shocked if Warner and HBO put out more live action content for the duo as the film did successfully well in the box office and in the streaming service for HBO Max. Personally I found this film to be just boring as I couldn’t find any interest in the characters or story and I just wanted to see Tom and Jerry pull so many shenanigans on each other like I did back when I was a kid watching their show on Cartoon Network/Boomerang. I hated this film halfway into watching the film and I said this to myself that this is so far the top contender for the worst movies list and yet it has found its way at #3, so you can imagine how worse it will get from here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP9TfCWaQT4

2. Home Sweet Home Alone – We mentioned already franchise that have over stayed their welcome but what about franchises that constantly use the same plot but instead of being sequels it just feels like reboots but again with the same exact story. Home Sweet Home Alone is shockingly the 6th Home Alone film and is about a boy who gets left behind during their family’s trip. But there is a big change to the story’s formula as the two “home invaders” in this movie are actually just your ordinary couple that pretty much believes the boy stole their doll that is worth a lot of money and they try to break in to get it back. Now you might be wondering where did we go wrong with this movie and our answer is just the idea itself. Why do we need to keep rebranding Home Alone after the 2nd film (although the third film isn’t great it’s pretty solid and an enjoyable film)? This film completely takes a 360 and literally just uses the exact same plot but instead of the brat who is home alone and his story we instead follow this stupid couple and their story and pretty much make the entire film’s centered plot the sub plot. Now while Home Alone has all these funny gags, Home Sweet Home Alone has nothing funny in this movie, no funny gags, nothing about this movie is funny. Also I can’t watch a film about a kid being home alone and root for the kid when he legit is acting like the biggest brat in the United States of America. Archie Yates when from starring in an Academy Award nominated film Jojo Rabbit and got to breakout from this film and show he can act, to pretty much playing a 10 year old boy who is just as big of an asshole as The Island Boys or worse a former president. Oh and remember when I said nothing in this movie was funny well I was wrong because in this family/kids movie this lovely couple of ours jokes about getting arrested for burglary and the joke includes O.J Simpson being arrested the 2nd time and going to jail because of it. Why are we making O.J jokes in a kids movie putting light about his first arrest after he allegedly murdered two people???? Also every character in this movie is written like an idiot, especially the lovely couple played by the sort of funny Ellie Kemper and the not at all funny Rob Delaney. But this movie is literally a pointless rip off of Home Alone and as it’s plot and name plastered all over the film just so Disney can make a few bucks or I guess to get people to watch the film on their streaming service. This movie is an embarrassment to the Home Alone franchise, hell I wouldn’t even count it in the franchise as I would be burying this solid long piece of shit down a deep hole and covering it with another piece of shit film that is somewhat decent. Anything on this list works I guess but hey at least we got to experience a train wreck happen in our homes for free. It’s not like there was a worse movie that you had to pay almost 20 dollars and spend 2 hours of your day sitting on bed bugged chairs with the chance of also catching the virus and then you think about your existence. Right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BkVf2voCr0

1. Dear Evan Hansen – Welp I guess it’s a good thing I watched this online on a third party site and not in a theater wasting my time and money on this god awful musical. So Dear Evan Hansen (the movie) is a film adaptation of the musical with the same name. However both star Ben Platt and both were created by Ben Platt’s rich daddy who decided hey let’s have our loving son who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and let’s make this disgusting movie happen. I say this with whole remorse while the movie is disgusting let’s back track to the Tony award winning musical. So both the film and musical is about a boy who suffers from social anxiety and writes a letter to himself as his therapist recommended he do so to make himself feel better. So far nothing wrong with that but oh my here is the big kicker. Evan has a cast on his arm and in school another boy signs his cast and finds his letter and gets upset about the letter and storms out of the school’s library. We then learn that he committed suicide but everyone believes the boy is friends with Evan and he then lies and makes up a whole friendship to the boy’s parents, the sister he has a crush on, the entire school and he does all of this to make them feel better. Now you might be wondering why does that sound disgusting and here is why. He does all this and gets together with the sister and they hook up and all of his lying makes the world believe that the parents are the reason why the boy killed himself because they didn’t raise him properly because the note that Evan wrote was posted online and said to be the boy’s suicide letter. So yeah that’s Dear Evan Hansen. Now as disgusting as this is, it still became one of the biggest Broadway musicals ever and got itself a film adaptation that makes the entire story more disgusting. Ben Platt looks like a 40 year old in this film and he is supposed to be playing a 17 year old. The rest of the cast feels lifeless if you ask me. The acting isn’t why this is the worst movie this year; it’s the entire film itself. The editing and cinematography for the film looks horrendous and the film is a total drag fest as I feel like the first hour of the film felt like I was watching the film for half a day. While the story is disgusting, it somehow manages to be forgotten by the musical numbers but for Broadway it works, for the film however it still doesn’t distract me of how disgusting the film’s story is. Also multiple big songs were taken out from the original musical and instead replaced with new songs created for them movie to add tension and they are nothing special. Now yes if this story were to be created for another movie and if Dear Evan Hansen the musical version not exists and say this version existed first then I guess my opinion would change, if I had a fucking IQ lower than 7. This entire film, story, production team, the Platt family, cast, everyone should literally be ashamed of themselves for making this movie, being a part of this movie and I can’t believe I’m saying this but Cats was a better film than this and that film looked like the inside of a crack house on fire. Like the other side of the story is about trauma and social anxiety and how the character deals with it with the shit going on around him and yet I could get into that film but the actual story of Connor’s suicide linking to Evan Hansen’s letter to himself and how he creates this lie of him and Connor being best friends is what makes this movie the worst movie of 2021. And if you think I’m being to hard on it trust me there are hundreds of reviews, video essays and more on YouTube that explain why this movie is terrible so if you can’t take my word on it then at least there are many people whose words you can rely on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_c_Jd-hP-s
Honorable Mentions:
The Boss Baby: Family Business – While the first film was cute and okay the second one is a snooze fest with barely any enjoyment. I did chuckle a couple of times and the animation looks pretty good here but I mean it doesn’t add anything new to the original Boss Baby film or it’ later series.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – Quite possibly the worst Conjuring film ever, this boring horror movie adds nothing special to the franchise. It’s not really scary at all and the screenplay was very terrible. While the performances from Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are great as usual, everyone else and everything else in this film take a huge step back compared to the other two films in the franchise.
Black Widow: While I don’t think this film is terrible, it’s not that good. I found the film to be very disappointing as the villain was mediocre, the action scenes were fine but the editing choices for those scenes felt a bit much and they were too much going on in these scenes. And it felt like the film came out a few years too late as yes the film is a needed film but it feels like it should of came out maybe in 2017 right after Civil War. But hey I give it a solid 2.5 out of 5 at least its watchable somewhat.
